Nelson S. Bushman, son of Charles Henry and Susanne Bushman, passed away Monday morning, July 8, 1946, while at work at the Kraft Foods company local plant. He was born on a farm south of Milledgeville in Whiteside County, February 24, 1888, and attended the rural schools of that vicinity. He became a member of the United Brethren Church of Coleta. While still a youth, his parents moved to Milledgeville and he has lived his entire life in this community, becoming well known and respected by all. On June 24, 1912, he married Clara Hubbard, who mourns his passing.

Mr. Bushman was a member of the village board of Milledgeville for many, many years, beginning in 1933 and working earnestly and diligently at his appointments until his death. He was a past master of Milledgeville Lodge No. 345 A.F. & A.M. and past patron of Bernice chapter No. 492 O.E.S. He took great delight in the work of both orders and made a host of friends from far and near in each. He was employed by the Kraft Cheese Co. for over 25 years, earning a gold watch award for 25 years meritorious service over a year ago.

Nelson was a great sports enthusiast, following the national sports of baseball and football with keen interest. In his youth and young manhood he was an ardent player of hard baseball, and with a younger brother, Bill, the names of Bushman and Bushman announced the beginnings of games for many years. With increasing age he left the hard ball diamond for the newer game of softball and played every year with youthful enthusiasm. At the time of his passing, he was the spirit behind a revival in softball and the renovation of the Kraft diamond, which had been abandoned during the war years, even anticipating playing the game as he had ever done.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, six sons, Henry, Howard, Salem, Lynford, George, and David, and two daughters, Leila and Dorothy; six grandchildren and four brothers, Cyrus of Coleta, William of Dixon, Aaron of Sterling, and Lloyd of Milledgeville. He was predeceased in death by one son, Russell.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 at the Methodist church, with Rev. J.A. Smith, minister of the United Brethren Church of Coleta officiating. Mrs. William Maxfield sang “Have Thine Own Way, Lord” and “Some Day He’ll Make It Plain,” accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth Overholser at the organ. Mrs. Kenesaw Landis, Mrs. Lena Lee, Mrs. Ben Shultz, Mrs. George Sears, and Mrs. J.L. Bogott had charge of the floral tributes. Casket bearers were Kenesaw Landis, Robert Smith, Dr. D.W. Rawson, A.H. Wagner, P.A. Knox, and Paul Bracken. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery. - Sterling (IL) Daily Gazette, 11 Jul 1946
