"Alfred W. Gillett, 85, of Lebanon died Monday at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.
Alfred was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Clarence and Edith (Carey) Gillett. He moved to the United States as a child, residing in Salem before moving to the Halsey area. He graduated from Halsey High School and later entered the Navy, serving during World War II.
Following his discharge, he married Maxine Wallace on Feb. 29, 1948, in Brownsville. They resided in Brownsville and Crabtree before settling in Lebanon. Alfred had worked as a dairy farmer the majority of his life.
He had attended the Lebanon Free Methodist Church and enjoyed reading, playing chess and Boggle, and working.
He is survived by wife Maxine of Lebanon; sons Allen Gillett of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Kenneth Gillett of Lebanon; daughters Juanita Estep of Oklahoma, Diane Spencer and Charlotte Smail, both of Lebanon; brother Ray Gillett of Madras; sister Mae Olive Gillett of Hillsboro; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His son Wayne and brothers Willard and Lawrence preceded him in death."
