DENDRON - "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

Mrs. Ethel W. Pierce departed this life on Thursday, April 24, 2014, peacefully at her home in Dendron, Virginia, with her oldest daughter at her side. She was a native of Surry County and the daughter of the Richard Walter and Dorothy Wilkins Walter. She is preceded in death by her parents, maternal grandmother Florence Jenkins, and three sisters: Alice Faye Walter, Catherine E. Johnson, and Marlene V. Peace. Ethel Mae, as she was called by many, confessed Christ as her Savior at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church Dendron. She served in the church of her youth for well over forty years, attending Sunday school, Bible Study, and Morning Worship Service. She was an active member of the choir and when she "sung" there was no mistaking her voice for someone else's. Her love for gospel music ran deep and during her lifetime she was a member of two singing groups, Kenneth Jones and the Voices of Christ and the Gospel Crusaders. Ethel Mae retired from Colonial Williamsburg in 2001 after 30 years of service. She provided companion care for several people in the community of Dendron when her children were small. She placed great value upon her family and spent many sleepless nights worrying about each one of them for one reason or another. She enjoyed watching her soap operas daily and making sure one of her grandchildren watered her plants. She was a mother that spoke her piece but did not put limits on what she would do for her husband, children, and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Herman C. Pierce of 42 years, four children, Drexel (Melissa) of Smithfield, Tammy of the home, LaRita of Dendron, and Shaton (Gerrick) of Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Drexel Jr."DJ", Fredria "Promise", Konesha, LaRita, GerriYanah, Shamyah, - Daijah, Christopher, and Aaliyah; one great-grand child, Tramine; two god-sons David Ellis and Deon Overton; three sister, Hazel Johnson of Norfolk, Dorothy Rose of Elberon, and Joyce Walter of Surry; one Uncle, Junius Williams of Williamsburg, four sister-in-laws, Helen Pierce of Williamsburg, Harriet Ham (Gary) of New York, Helena Pierce of Smithfield, and Hope Wilkins (Walter); three brother-in-laws, Homer Pierce of Chesterfield, Harvey Pierce of Va. Beach, and Harry Pierce (Cathy) of Georgia; three devoted nephews Mitchell "Greg" Johnson, Keith Johnson, and Shelfer "Dean" Peace; three devoted friends Ida Byrd of Dendron, Linda Bailey-Jones of Surry, and Gwendolyn Brown of Dendron and host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Surry Sheriff Deputies and Surry Rescue Squad personnel that responded to our mother's home and worked so diligently to provide medical assistance. Surely we can not forget Mrs. Myrtle Jones who was always available for our mother when she needed her. We the family appreciates all acts of kindness bestowed upon us during this time. Your generosity and prayers will not be forgotten. May God bless each of you and keep you in his care. Viewing will be held on April 29, 2014, from 6p.m. to 7p.m. at First Baptist Church Dendron. Funeral Service will be held on April 30, 2014, at 2p.m. at First Baptist Church Dendron. Interment will be at the Johnson Family Cemetery 431 Clubhouse Road, Dendron. Funeral Service has been entrusted to the Staff of Peace-Bland Funeral Home, 237 Railroad Avenue, Waverly, Virginia, 804-834-2219, James I Gay, Funeral Director. [email protected]
