Plane Crash Victim Formerly Attended School In Lewiston
Forest Ranger Charles Langer, 37, who lost his life in the crash of a three-seater plane from Hill Field, Utah, which disappeared April 5 during a hunt for a bomber lost in the central Idaho wilderness attended school in Lewiston while he was making his home at Stites.
He entered in the fall of 1922 and was a student here for three years, being graduated with the class of 1925. He was prominent in high school athletics, playing fullback on the football team for three years, on the track team and also played three years of interclass basketball.
He graduated from the school of forestry at the University of Idaho and was employed by the U.S. Forest Service first stationed at Missoula then at Fr. Duchesne, Utah and later at Stanley in Custer County. He left Stites 15 years ago.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Langer. His father still resides in the Stites area. His mother, Mrs. Mary Kelly, resides in California. Her remarriage was to Charles Kelly, one-time clerk at the Bollinger Hotel.
Mr. Langer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leah Langer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Baldwin, pioneers of Stites, where she was born. Two children, Charles Langer, 13, and Mary Langer, 8; his mother and father and one brother, Walter Langer residing in California. Mrs. Langer and Mrs. Kelly and Mr. Baldwin are at Stanley waiting the arrival of the body.
