Michael Wayne Southerland, died Sunday, November 30, 2008, in the company of his immediate family.

"Papa" is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, June Kaye Southerland; his son, Michael Zachary Southerland, and his wife Stephanie; two daughters, Michaela Brittany and Micah Alysha Southerland and fiance Blake Mitchell; and four grandchildren, Riley, Benton and Campbell Southerland, and Lilah Mitchell, all of Greenville. In addition are Mike's mother and father, Lyda and Alvin Southerland of Pickens; three brothers, Rodney, Greg, and Randy; and four sisters, Elaine, Virginia, Mitzi, and Tammy.

Born in Middlesex, N.J., Mike made his home in Greenville as a builder (Mike Southerland Builder and Upstate Renovations) for more than 40 years. He was a member of Earle Street Baptist Church.

Papa held many things close to his heart, including his love for providing for others, his weakness for all things Harley-Davidson, his beautiful pink roses he grew for Kaye, and more than anything, his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by Woodlawn Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Earle Street Baptist Church, followed by entombment at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cancer Centers of the Carolinas, 3 Butternut Drive, Suite B, Greenville, SC 29605 or to Earle Street Baptist Church, 225 W. Earle Street, Greenville, SC 29609.

The family would like to offer our sincere gratitude to Dr. Edenfield, the staff at Cancer Centers of the Carolinas and the Greenville Memorial Oncology floor for their tender loving care of Papa.
