Mrs. Nettie M. Luther Hughes, 70, widow of George W. Hughes, was found dead in bed at her home, 389 Pawling street, early Saturday afternoon. She had been dead only a short time when found. Her death was attributed to a stroke.
Mrs. Hughes, who lived alone, had been afflicted with a heart ailment. On Saturday afternoon a woman stopped at the Hughes home with a chicken for Mrs. Hughes' Easter dinner. Unable to attract anyone to the door, the woman notified a neighbor, Mrs. Francis M. Gallagher 387 Pawling street.
Neighbors, observing that Friday night's newspaper was still on the porch and the mail was still in the mail box, became alarmed and informed Mrs. Hughes' niece, Mrs. J Watson Lehr, city.
Mrs. Lehr went to the Hughes home, entered the house and found Mrs. Hughes dead.
Mrs. Hughes was born at Harrisville, July 23, 1869 a daughter of Michael and Mary Ann Koster Luther. She was married to George W. Hughes, also of Harrisville, in October, 1886.
Mr. and Mrs. Hughes came here about three years after their marriage and Mrs. Hughes had since lived here. She has resided in the same Pawling street house for nearly 50 years.
Mr. Hughes died here March 21, 1922. He worked in the brass department of the New York Air Brake company plant.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Unity Rebekah lodge and had been a member of Stone Street Presbyterian church for more than 40 years.
Surviving her are two children, Richard Alfred Hughes, Waterville Me., and Mrs. James W. (Leta O.) Campbell, Woodside, a sister, Mrs. John (Roslyn) Kerr, Star Lake; two nieces, Mrs. J Watson (Nellie Jamieson) Lehr and Mrs. Ada Luther Babcock, city, and two grandchildren, Richard Alfred Hughes Jr. and Miss Gwendolyn Hughes, Waterville, ME.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 at the home. Rev. Leon D. Sanborne, minister of the Stone Street Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be made in North Watertown cemetery.
