He was born on Aug. 30, 1933, in Butler to the late James E. Hemphill Sr. and Velma (Krabill) Hemphill.
Mr. Hemphill was a member of the North Main Street Church of God.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.
Mr. Hemphill was a member of the VFW Post 249 and the American Legion Post 117 of Butler.
He retired from Butler Armco Works where he had been a furnace tender at Hilltop Silicon.
Mr. Hemphill is survived by his daughter, Becky Hemphill of Barling, Ark.; his two grandchildren, Travis and Shawn Welker; his great-grandson, Aaron Welker; his two sisters, Sandra "Sauny" Hemphill of Butler, and Carol Wigton and her husband, Donald, of Zelienople, and his many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Lee (Goeppner) Hemphill, who he married in 1953 and who passed away on Sept. 20, 1984, and his daughter, Jamie Sue Welker.
Hemphill - Friends of James E. Hemphill Jr., who died Thursday, April 24, 2014, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brandon Lenhart of North Main Street Church of God officiating. Immediately following the funeral, officers and members of the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military honors at the funeral home. Private burial will take place in Butler County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Road, Suite 320, Wexford, PA 15090.
