McMillin, Thomas. Born in Kentucky. Appointed from Kentucky. Assistant Surgeon 19 Aug 1862; Bvt Capt and Maj 13 Mar 1865 for faithful and meritorious service during the Civil War. Lt. Col. 13 Mar 1867 for meritorious and distinguished service during the outbreak of cholera among a detachment of recruits for the 8th Infantry en route from New York to San Francisco; died 6 Apr 1873. A tribute to Assistant Surgeon Thomas McMillin in the "Weekly Alta California" SF newspaper, Apr 19, 1873 was written by his brother officers serving with the troops in the field against the Modoc Indians. Dr. McMillin was praised for "his uniform kindness, amiability, and many noble qualities". He suffered from "disease contracted from exposure in the service, he has nobly, and without hesitation performed all duty required of him, both in camp and in the field".
