Alexander I. Barden lost his life on June 9, 1917 in the Granite Mountain Speculator Mine Fire, along with 167 other men. It was the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American History.

"BORDEN-Funeral services for Sam and Alexander Borden will take place at Sherman & Reed's funeral parlors tomorrow afternoon at an hour to be announced later. Final services will be held in the Greek church. Interment in Mount Moriah cemetery."

NOTE: Although the death certificate says his birthplace was Austria, the World War I Draft Registration Card completed just days before his death states he was born in Greece.
