Leah (pronounced "Lear" by many) was the daughter of Kate Brown Sowell Wade Shelton and Patrick Henry Sowell (FAG Memorial # 20910199). Her father died when she was 5 years old. She was born and raised in the Smyrna Community of Nacogdoches County. She moved to the Oak Flat Community, outside of Huntington, TX, after her marriage to William ELI Russell.

Leah had a younger sister - Cora Sowell Rogers (FAG Memorial #37392290) According to the dates, their mother, Kate, would have been expecting Cora when her husband passed away.

Her older brother was John A. Sowell (FAG Memorial #86891360)

Services were held at The First United Pentecostal Church in Huntington.
