John came to America in 1857 on the ship BAVARIA with his cousins John and Anna Maria who settled in Richland County. His sister Anna Maria arrived in Mansfield in 1854. His mother and three siblings came to Ohio in 1861. His father, Georg Keinath died in Germany in 1860 from blood poisoning.

John married Caroline Durr on March 26, 1867 in Crawford County. She was born there on January 26, 1842. After his death in 1902, Caroline remarried to a Gotlob Mauerhan in 1905.
