Austin married Juanita L. Harred, who had a son from her previous marriage. Together they raised their family in Chino, California. He was a walnut farmer, and worked for Pomona Ready Mix for more than 30 years.
His wife, Juanita, who died in 1985, and a son, Jackie Lee Amason, preceded him in death.
All of his sisters and one brother survived him, Leona, Olivia, Willa, Jean and Carolyn, and a brother, Jack.
