Enlisted at Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York, as a 21 year old carpenter, into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry, also later referred to as "Upton's Regulars" on 28 July for a term of three years.

Placed as a sergeant in Capt. John Ramsey's Co. H at Camp Schuyler, near Herkimer , New York on 23 August 1862.

Saw action in such places as Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, to name a few.

on 31 October 1864 he was sent to Satterlee Hosptial in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Reason unknown, whether a wound or something else. Apparently he remained there until discharged on 17 May 1865.
