Mr Baldwin was a member of the Whig party, and in 1854 was nominated to represent Tuolome County. Daniel Baldwin became a member of the first California legislature in 1850. He was skilled as a foundry man.
On April 10, 1850, the first Legislature passed
an act providing for the organization of the State
Militia into four divisions and eight brigades.
D. P. Baldwin was made a Major General.

He lived to be 67 years old and died of chronic diarrhea.
