Ellen was one of six children of John Robinson, a printer (from Omagh, County Tyrone Northern Ireland), and Mary Turner or Sarah (Maiden Name Unknown). Most records seem to indicate that her mother's name was Sarah, but her death certificate says her mother was Mary Turner. Did the informant ("Miss Bell") really know Ellen's mother's name? If Sarah was her mother, she died on 14 April 1834 when Ellen was just 2½ years old. Her father, John Robinson, died nine months later on 13 January 1835. So, Ellen's parents were both gone by the time she just a couple of months past her third birthday.

According to 100 Fascinating Londoners (published in 2005), Ellen was an "Irish orphan...raised in Liverpool by her brother." That would have been nearly impossible since her brother, John, was born in 1830 and her brother, Joseph, was born about 1834. Ellen also had one sister, Sarah Jane, and two other siblings who could have been either girls or boys. The four I know about were born about the same time period and were too young to raise anyone when they became orphans...so who raised Ellen? She talks about an uncle who gave her away at her wedding (see her poem, "My Secret"), so perhaps he raised her in Liverpool. I do not know.

About her siblings that I know of: In 1860 (when Ellen married), her brother--also named John Robinson--was a news correspondent in Dublin, Ireland. Her brother, Joseph, died on 27 January 1862, when he was just 27 years old. Her sister, Sarah Jane Robinson, was born c1826 (baptized on 12 September 1826) and died on 26 December 1848 (unmarried).

Ellen married William Gregsten on 29 February 1860 in Liverpool, England, at St. Bride's church. At the time, William lived there on Clayton Square, and Ellen lived on Falkner Street. Soon after their marriage, some time in 1860, they left England and moved to London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Although William died there in 1869, Ellen chose to remain in Canada for the rest of her life. (Note: They had no children.)

In London, Canada, Ellen did charitable work for the North Street Methodist church, where her Sunday School class was called The Busy Bees. Thus, she was often called "Mother Bee" or "Queen Bee." In the mid-1870s she volunteered for the Women's Christian Association (WCA), where she eventually was president. She started soup kitchens, and opened the Women's Refuge and Children's Home "to provide destitute women with skills and moral and religious improvement so that they could keep their children." (Source: 100 Fascinating Londoners, edited by Michael Baker and Hilary Bates Neary, published by Lorimer Publishing on November 7, 2005).

Ellen's WCA charitable works also included helping to provide medical care for many, opening up homes for older men and women, and helping to build a hospital in 1887 for "incurables." This was an early precursor to what we know today as long-term care. Ellen was also the treasurer of the Protestant Orphans' Home.

She was well loved by many, and died at the age of 92, still living in her cottage on Colborne Street. According to 100 Londoners, "Her faithful teaching and humble service endeared her to generations of Londoners."
