Ernest Clay Bowers, 83, of Marshall died peacefully at home January 16, 2010, following a long illness.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Winifred N. (Groves) Bowers, his eldest son, Ernest F. Bowers, and his great granddaughter, Solycia Clark. Ernest outlived four of his siblings and leaves behind his brother William Bowers of Schertz, TX.
He is survived by daughters Barbara Frye of Sanibel, Fl, Amanda Bowers of Purcellville, Va, and Marlene Pierce of Upperville, Va; two sons Michael Bowers and Rodney Bowers both of Marshall, Va., sons-in law Donald Frye of Sanibel, Fl and Randy Pierce of Upperville, Va. and daughter in law Pauline Bowers of Leesburg, Va. His grandchildren include Kimberly Walker, Michele Frye, Renee Fisher, Denise Pierce, Christopher Bowers, Tiffany Bowers, USAF Staff Sgt. Michael Davis, US Army PFC Randy Pierce, Jr, and Alicia Pierce; his great-grandchildren Joshua Walker and Nicholas Walker, Ashley Fitzwater, Adin Davis and Gracie Davis, Antonio Clark, Abbie Bowers, Lorenzo Bowers and Vanessa Bowers. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ernest was born July 7, 1926 in Marion, Va., one of six children to William and Carrie (Hart) Bowers. He followed his father’s occupation as coal miner, entering the mines in his late teens. He took a brief hiatus to join the United States Army towards the end of World War II, serving as field lineman with Battery A, 3rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion in France and Germany. Upon his return to the United States after the war, he resumed coal mining and was employed with Westmoreland Coal, Winding Gulf Mines in Beckley WV, for 36 years before retiring due to black lung disease.
His interests included family, and simple pleasures of avid reading, playing cards, watching Westerns, following baseball and the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed driving as evidenced by his commuting between WV and Marshall, Va. for all those years. Upon his retirement he kept busy with mowing and general “tinkering around the house and his car.” Due to his employment and subsequent coal mining accidents, he was an ardent supporter and lifelong member of the United Mine Workers of America labor union.
Services will be held Friday, January 22, 2010 3:00 pm at Enders & Shirley Funeral Chapel in Berryville with his nephew, Pastor James Bowers officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 prior to the service for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations and/or support in his remembrance to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capital Area 3701 Pender Drive, Ste 400, Fairfax, VA 22030.
