HOWARD: In his quiet, reserved way, GENE DURBIN built his family with the bricks of his hard work ethic and the mortar of their shared sense of humor. He instilled in them the importance of family, and the importance of quality time and quantity time.

Gene passed away early Saturday morning April 26, 2014 in his Apple Valley home. He was 87.

Born June 14, 1926 in Bellville to Omar and Elsie (Long) Durbin, Gene was graduated from Bellville High School in 1944. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University in 1951.

His job with Cummins Diesel moved him to Columbus, Indiana. He came back to Ohio accepting a position with Swan Rubber in Bucyrus, and moved with his job again, this time to Columbus, Ohio when the company was bought by Amerace Esna. Gene had been active with the Jaycees during his working career, and regardless of where he lived, he remained a loyal fan of The Ohio State University football Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lu (Fankhauser) Durbin, whom he married September 6, 1947; their children Cheryl Klingenberger of Bucyrus, Deborah (Bob) Dairy of Pensacola, Florida, Douglas Durbin of Port Charlotte, Florida, Bruce Durbin of Venice, Florida, and Anita Ridenour of Glenford; grandchildren Jo Ann (Jason) Statser of Atoka, Tennessee, Heather (Billy) Schuck of Turnersville, New Jersey, Tiffany (Jason) Briglin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Charity Peavley of Columbus and Sierra (Keller) Moore of New Lexington; ten great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Amber Dairy; sons-in-law Joe Klingenberger and Rick Ridenour; brothers Elmer, Aaron and Garnet Durbin and sisters Gifta Clawson, Lucille Shafer and June Durbin.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery. Friends may call the hour prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association may be made at the funeral home.
