Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He led the 13th New Jersey at the Battle of Gettysburg, and an infantry brigade in major General William T. Sherman's army, participating in the operations resulting in the capture of Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the fighting through the Carolinas. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He served as Chairman of the Chickamuaga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission from 1905 to 1909.
