Ned Eichler, son of innovative housing developer, dead at 83.

Edward "Ned" Eichler, son of Joseph Eichler, developer of the innovative Eichler homes, died of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia at his Tiburon home. He was 83.

Mr. Eichler was active with his father in the family's real estate development firm, which built more than 11,000 units in the Bay Area and parts of greater Los Angeles from around 1950 to the early 1970s. He died March 27.

Mr. Eichler served first as head of purchasing for the company in 1951, and then after a brief absence, as its marketing manager from 1954 to 1963. He developed the firm's system for acquiring materials and distributing them to job sites.

Continuing to work in the housing field, Mr. Eichler's next position was with apartment developer the Klingbeil Co. from 1968 to 1972, followed by a stint at the Victor Palmieri Co. in New York in 1973. He also served as president of the Levitt Corp. from 1975 to 1979.

In 1982, Mr. Eichler founded Eichler Corp., a project for lending money to existing apartment complexes. He retired and sold the company at age 64.

Mr. Eichler was born in San Francisco July 1, 1930 and attended elementary school in Hillsborough and high school in San Mateo. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He also completed the coursework for a Ph.D. in history at the University of California at Berkeley at the age of 50.

Mr. Eichler served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1952 to 1954.

He also served as the chairman of the California Governor's Commission on Housing and Director of the New Communities Project at UC Berkeley. He was a visiting professor at UC Berkeley's business school, among other institutions. He authored four books, enjoyed swimming and golf and was an enthusiastic fan of basketball, tennis and golf.

Mr. Eichler was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Joseph Eichler, and his brother Richard Eichler. He is survived by his wife, Ava Eichler, sons David and Steven, granddaughters Sarah and Lauren Eichler, daughter Gina Tomaselli, stepdaughter Erika Elliot and granddaughters Taylor and Catheryn Elliott.
