John Henry Wideman, a son of John and Sarah Fletcher [née Tatom] Wideman, was born in the bounds of Long Cane A.R.P. in Abbeville County, South Carolina on the 26th of January 1832.

In 1859, John married Miss Katherine "Kate" Patton, a daughter of William and Jane Kennedy Patton of Cedar Springs, South Carolina.

Served in Company H, 7th Battalion, South Carolina Infantry (Nelson's) (Enfield Rifles). Company H was known as Brooks Infantry Partisan Rangers and the Joe Johnston Rifles.
