Marcus Woods, born Jan. 15, 1920, in Dryhill, Ky., passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, from congestive heart failure.

His parents were Price and Maggie Estridge Woods. He attended school in Kentucky and moved to Moscow in 1937 to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years. He was in the U.S. Navy from August 1944 to December 1945 as a fireman second class. He married Ruth Kammeyer Oct. 14, 1939, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Moscow and lived there for 10 years, before moving to Lewiston in 1947.

Marcus worked at Garrett Freightliner and Inland Motor Freight for 40 years as a driver, assistant labor relations director and assistant director of safety. He was promoted to safety director in 1972 and held that position until retirement in Pocatello in 1982.

Marcus was a member of the American Trucking Association Council of Safety Supervisors and was chairman of the Western Council of Safety Supervisors for four years. He won numerous national and state safety awards. In 1977 was chosen Idaho Safety Director of the Year and in 1976 he was Wyoming Safety Director of the Year. He also was a member of the Orchards Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1994. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Hilbert of Lewiston, Michaelann Haffner of Redmond, Ore., Sandra Woods of Beaverton, Ore., and Shannon Luden of Sammamish, Wash.; two sons, David Woods of Lewiston and Philip Woods of Avondale, Ariz.; a brother, Paul Woods of Dryhill; a sister, Nancy Woods of Dryhill; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lewiston.
