Daniel Shelton received the major portion of his mother's estate under the terms of her will which was probated in Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1770, which was recorded in Amelia County, VA, August 29, 1770.

Daniel was appointed a captain of Pittsylvania County militia, September 21, 1775, and major of militia in 1778.

In 1764 he purchased 620 acres on South Nottaway River in Amelia County. He received a grant of 1,515 acres on Panther Creek (now Whitehorn) in present Pittsylvania County. He served as a member of the Committee of Safety, had six sons in the Revolution and was himself a captain. He was appointed a captain of Pittsylvania County militia during the years 1767 and 1790. He was assigned to the militia company of his son, Captain Gabriel Shelton in 1777.

Married about 1750 in Amelia County VA Lettice Young.
