Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, November 13, 1973, page 11:
  Walter Kassing, 80, 215 S. Brown St., died at 7:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Hospital, Highland.
  He was born on Feb. 26, 1893, in Poag, a son of the late William and Kathryn Koenig Kassing.
  He was married to Laura Balke on Dec. 20, 1913, in Hillsboro. She survives.
  Other survivors are a son, Clarence Kassing, Edwardsville, daughters Mrs. Hazel Gilmore and Mrs. Joseph (Dorothy) Miller, both of Edwardsville, a brother, Wilbur Kassing, Staunton, and sisters Mrs. Lena Balke, Worden, Mrs. Emma Henderson, Collinsville, and Mrs. Laura Shirley, Collinsville.
  Twelve grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
  He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, two brothers and one sister.
  Mr. Kassing was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Edwardsville.
  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Paul's Church, with Rev. Glenn Davis officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Edwardsville.
  Friends may call at Lesley Marks Funeral Home after 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. Friday until the hour of service.
  The family requests that memorials be given to the St. Paul Memorial Fund.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Bill Miller, Danny Miller, Joe Miller, Dick McDonough, Robert Young and James Peterson.
