John Manter, patriarch of the Manter family of Tisbury, Mass. When and with whom he arrived in New England is not of record.

According to Banks in his History of Martha's Vineyard, in 1657 a John Mantah was admitted a freeman of Edgartown, Mass. This led Banks to conclude that the said John Mantah was at least 21 years of age born in or before the year 1636.

On July 1, 1657 of record at Barnstable, Mass., "John Manton Married With Martha Lumbart." At marriage John Manton may well have been about 21 years of age, b. circa 1636, but since the nativity of his birth has never been proved the writer offers no pretense of when or where he was born. The current writer also does not accept Banks' correlation that John Mantah of 1657 Edgartown, on the Island of Martha's Vineyard, and John Manter of 1657 Barnstable in the Plymouth Colony, later of Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard, were one and the same person.

Martha Lumbert was the dau. of Ens. Barnard Lumbert, b. Sept. 19, 1639 at Barnstable and bapt. there Nov. 2, 1639 by Rev. John Lothrop. The birth of the first three Manton children are recorded at Barnstable. Martha was the granddau. of Thomas Lumbert of Barnstable, who had four known wives and three sets of children, several of whom had by 1657 established their own Lumbert families at Barnstable. In Feb. 1662/3 John Manton's ownership of five parcels of land was recorded in the Barnstable town book, including a parcel transferred to him by Joshua Lumbert, wife Martha's half-uncle.

In 1660 permission was given by the Plymouth Colony Court to a group of men to purchase land at Saconesset (now Falmouth, Mass.), with the Proprietors' Records of Falmouth begun on Nov. 29, 1661. John Manton does not appear therein, but was residing at present Falmouth by the mid-1670s. In 1671 the Town of Tisbury was founded on Martha's Vineyard (Dukes County, Mass.) In 1677 John Manton exchanging his land at present Falmouth for property at Tisbury. Thereafter, portions of the Manter family would reside at greater Tisbury for upwards of 200 years.

Between 1677 and 1707 John Manter appears frequently in the Tisbury Town Records. Banks errored by calling him the John Manter appointed in 1692 as Ensign of the Tisbury Foot Company. The Jan. 1698/9 probate of the estate of John's son George clearly identifies John Manter, Jr. as the Ensign in the family.

John Manter, senior wrote his will at Tisbury on September 12, 1698, which he signed by his mark, with administration granted to son Benjamin on May 20, 1708. The will was presented for probate on May 25, 1708, with the estate inventory totaling £28.05.00 made on May 26, 1708 and submitted for approval on June 3, 1708. The last time John Manter's name appears in the Tisbury town records is March 27, 1707 in a division of land [Tisbury Town Records, 52.] John's death does not appear in the Tisbury records, but he is assumed to have died during the early part of the month of May 1708.

Following is a summary of his rather short will [Dukes Probate, I:19, 20]:

• To Son John all my land at "Keephegon" and all my several shares of land in the necks eastward from the Old Mill Brook, and half a common write (sic) in said town.
• To Son Benjamin my Dwelling house, with all my lands both meadow land and upland adjoining thereto with all out housing and fencing whatsoever thereto belonging and also half a common write (sic) in said town.
• All my movable estate unto my three daughters to be divided equally among them.

As his September 1698 will makes no mention of or provision for wife Martha, it must be presumed she was then already dead, not as claimed that she survived her husband and d. in Tisbury in 1724.

John is traditionally assumed to have been interred at the present West Tisbury Village Cemetery, but has no extant gravestone, if he had one to begin with.

The children of John Manter and Martha Lumbert were:

• i. John Manter, b. June 15, 1658 [recorded at Barnstable] and died at Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard May 26, 1744; m. His probate consists of the first 3 pages of the first probate book of Dukes County, Mass., and substantially clarifies numerous misconceptions and erroneous printed genealogy regarding George's sisters Mercy and Mary, and helps clarify the impact of a clause in John Manter senior's 1698 will.

They had one known child, son Thomas, whose birth on Dec. 1683 is recorded at Barnstable and is named an heir under the guardianship of his maternal grandfather in the Jan. 2, 1698/9 distribution of his uncle George Manter's estate.
