Billy attended Carthage R-9 Schools, graduating with the class of 1973. He excelled in athletics, including football and baseball. He later coached Junior Babe Ruth baseball, leading his team to district championships. He also played competitive softball for a number of years. He was a retired forklift operator for Schreiber Cheese Co., Carthage. Among his favorite pastimes were watching Carthage High School football games, fishing with his sons and brothers and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.
