SERVICE IS HELD FOR ARTHUR L. CASE, WHO FOUNDED ART'S FAMILY CENTERS
A memorial service was held yesterday for Arthur L. Case, 86, of Redmond, founder of Art's Family Centers, who died Easter Sunday.
Mr. Case founded his first store in 1940 in Juanita and opened Art's Family Center at 9999 Holman Road NW in 1956. The North Seattle store with a revolving sign offers not only groceries but also a pharmacy, nursery, bakery, restaurant, delicatessen and photo and sound services.
At one time, Mr. Case had seven stores in the Seattle area, but he sold all except the Holman Road store in the mid-1970s.
He always ran independent stores. ''He had his work cut out for him to compete with the chains,'' said his son, Scott Case of Redmond, now president of the company. ''He never really retired.'' The Holman Road store will continue.
Mr. Case started working in grocery stores at age 14 in Idaho. He continued working through his college years at Washington State University. He was named Washington State Food Dealers Grocer of the Year in 1971.
He also is survived by sons Richard Case of Kirkland and Robert Case of Bellevue; a daughter, Kathleen Case of Kirkland; a brother, Walter Case of Yakima; and eight grandchildren.
The memorial service was held at St. Jude's Catholic Church of Redmond. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.
