Sergeant, Company K, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed in the Snake Creek fight against Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce Indians.

Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, he enlisted with the 15th New York Heavy Artillery, a German unit, his entry reads MIELKE, MAX.—Age, 20 years. Enlisted, January 27, 1864, at Fort Lyon, Va.; mustered in as private, Co. C, January 27, 1864, to serve three years; deserted, August 31, 1864, in the field. Following the Civil War, he enlisted on March 27, 1866, in New York City, in Company H, 17th Infantry (later redesignated as the 35th Infantry). He had blue eyes, dark hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He was in confinement at Galveston, Texas, from May to July 1866. He was discharged on March 27, 1869, at Fort Mason, Texas, upon expiration of his term of service, as a Sergeant. He reenlisted on April 9, 1870, in New York City, in Company G, 10th Infantry Regiment, and married Josephine Rosette on October 28, 1871, in Brownsville, Texas. Their daughter, Lilly Josephine Mielke Johnson, was born on August 28, 1872. He was discharged on April 9, 1875, at Fort Clark, Texas, upon expiration of his term of service, as a Sergeant. He reenlisted again, on March 24, 1876, in McComb, Mississippi, and was assigned to Company K, 7th US Cavalry. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, 25-27 June 1876, he was in Benteen's Column, and on the second day of the battle, he was wounded in the left foot while fighting on Reno Hill. He was evacuated to Fort Abraham Lincoln on the steamer "Far West". He was killed on September 30, 1877, in the Snake Creek Fight against Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce Indians. His widow, Josephine, resided at 15th Street, Brownsville, Texas, later moving to Port Isabel, Texas; she received a pension of $8 per month from October 1, 1877, raised to $12 per month on October 1, 1878, and to $30 per month on May 1, 1920 until her death.
