Private, Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer and most of his unit, at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

He first enlisted on August 15, 1866, in the 7th Cavalry. He reenlisted on August 15, 1871, at age 18, in Louisville, Kentucky. He had blue eyes, light hair, a light complexion, and was 5 feet, 7 1/4 inches tall. On some official records, he is listed as James Milton. After the battle, the bodies of the dead soldiers were buried where they fell; a year later, the bodies were dug up and reburied in the mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill.
