Billie Joe High

Billie J. “Bill” High, age 79, of Martin, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. He was the former owner of High’s Family Bootery in Martin. He closed the store in 1997.

He was a 1953 graduate of Martin High School and a United States Army Veteran. Bill married Martha Isabella Fisher, 13 July 1957 in Weakley County, TN. Mr. High and his family lived in Memphis from 1959-1971. He started working for Ralford’s Shoes in 1961 as a shoe saleman and worked his way to manager of Ralford’s East located at Poplar and Perkins. This was an orthopedic shoe business where he learned to fill prescriptions for orthopedic shoes. He mentored under Lester Hudson and Kelly Ralford. While in Memphis they were members of Trinity United Methodist Church and later at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where they were very active. Bill was a member of the church choir and was president at one time of the Oxford Sunday School Class.

In 1971 he moved his family back to his hometown in Martin. From 1971-75 he worked for Life and Casualty Insurance Company. In 1975 he and his wife bought Young’s Shoe Store and Repair Shop and renamed it High’s Family Bootery. This was a retail store as well as shoe repair. He also filled orthopedic prescription for shoes. He closed the store in 1997. He then served as a substitute teacher for the Weakley County School System for 11 years with his wife, who had taught for 30 years in the system. He was affectionately called “Mr. Bill,”. He was very active in his children’s sports activities. He served as president of the Babe Ruth League when his son was in the league. During the children’s high school years he continued to be involved where they participated in football, basketball and cheerleading. He was a former member of the Young Men’s Business Club and also served on the Martin Library Board. He was president many years of the Martin High School 1953 Class Reunions.Mr. High was a member of Martin United Methodist Church and the Bob Carroll Sunday School class. He was president at one time of the class and was a former member of the church choir.

Mr. High leaves his wife of 56 years, Martha Fisher High of Martin; his son, Berry (Tessa) High of Dresden; two daughters, Renaee High (Mark) Bennett of Fulton, Ky. and Senaee High (David) Stout of Martin; eight grandchildren, Tara High (Tim) Rhodes of Dresden, Brandon (Courtney) Stout of Martin, Kayla High of Southaven, Miss., BriAnn Stout (Bradley) Selph of Erin, Landie Legons (Keith) Gallimore of Martin, Lance (Kayla) Legons of Canton, Miss., Jake Bennett and Becky Bennett, both of Tampa, Fla. He was the proud great-grandfather of four, Landon Gallimore, Gavin Selph, Cash Rhodes and Elliott of Legons. He also leaves his brother, Donald Ray (Betty)
High of Martin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubern and Elsie High of Martin.

Visitation will be at Murphy Funeral Home of Martin from 5-8 p.m. Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Martin First United Methodist Church. Services for Mr. High will be officiated by the Revs. Randy Cooper and Betty High Mixon, cousin of Mr. High’s. Burial will be in Cates Cemetery at Martin.Pallbearers will be Brandon Stout, Bradley Selph, Tim Rhodes, Keith Gallimore, Ben Kelly and Craig Atkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Lamar, Ronnie Blackard, Warren Petty, Dwight Merritt, Don Gill, Bobbie Nethery, Daron McNatt, Bobby Lemonds, Lance Legons, Jake Bennett, Sean Gerster, Members of the Bob Carroll Sunday School class and member of the 1953 Margin High School class.
