Nebraska Governor. He was at Knox College, where he studied law when the Civil War began and joined Union Army as a Private in the 9th Illinois Cavalry. After the war, he resumed his education, was admitted to the bar and established his legal career in Osceola, Nebraska. In 1874, he became a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, serving until November 1878, when he was elected as a Republican and the fifth Governor Nebraska. While in office, the Slocumb liquor law was enacted, restricting liquor licensing, railroad construction was advanced and the state's economy improved. After completing his second term in 1883, he retired from political life. He returned to his legal practice and worked in the banking until his death at age 83.
