A diplomat, he served several times as English ambassador to Scotland. He was a Privy Councillor and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Created Knight Banneret for his part in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (Musselburgh, near Edinburgh)1547. He was a reluctant custodian of Mary Queen of Scots 1584-1585 and took part in her trial in 1587.
