Caroline Lunt Coffman Lewis died Friday, April 11, at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Va., surrounded by her family. She was born on May 5, 1919 in Oakland, Calif., to the late Burdette Nelson Coffman and Margaret Knight Coffman. She moved to Virginia at age one following her mother's death. Her father died when she was five. She was raised by her grandparents and her aunt at "Valley Point," Albemarle County, Va. There, she met the love of her life, the late Rt. Rev. David Henry Lewis Jr. On the day after he completed graduate study at The Virginia Theological Seminary, they married in the church where they had met, and are survived by their four sons, David Henry Lewis III of Reedville, Dabney Nelson Lewis of Richmond, Robert Owen Lewis and his wife, Eleanor, of Montpelier, and William Meriwether Lewis and his wife, Ann, of Richmond. Also surviving are grandsons, Catesby Perrin Lewis of Washington, D.C., and Cary Nelson Lewis of Barcelona, Spain; and her granddaughters, Caroline Lacy Lewis and Rose Meriwether Lewis of Richmond.

She is also survived by her sister, Catherine Nelson Coffman Stratton of Cambridge, Mass.; her nephew, Gerrit V. Henry Jr. of Bellevue, Wash.; and by her nieces, Catherine Stratton of Raleigh, Cary Stratton Boyd of Rowley, Mass., Laura Stratton Thoresby Blanchet of Kent, England; Dr. Gerrit V. Henry III of Phoenix, Ariz., Caroline Boyd Kronley and Sarah Finch Kronley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and by her cousin, Staige Nolley of Richmond, and her sister-in-law, Katharine Dulaney of Charlottesville.

Mrs. Lewis had served in various volunteer capacities for the Episcopal Church, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Westminster-Canterbury of Richmond for their many kindnesses.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, or The Virginia Theological Seminary. Mrs. Lewis's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, Va., six miles west of Charlottesville.
