LODGE GRASS — Theda Maxine Lawrence, 94, of Lodge Grass, passed away Monday morning, April 14, 2014, while a resident of Heritage Acres of Hardin since 2010. She was born in the now nonexistent town of Leroy on May 27, 1919, the fourth child of Carlton Hugh (Mac) and Ora Oreta McCaughin. The family moved from Sheridan, Wyo., to Lodge Grass when Maxine was 10 years old. She attended school at Lodge Grass and graduated in 1937, and then attended nurses training in Sheridan for a short time.

Maxine married Edward F. (Eddie) Lawrence on May 26, 1941, and they spent their first summer ranching in Decker. Later, they moved back to Lodge Grass Creek, to the Spear place where Max cooked for the dudes. Afterwards, they leased the Poor Farm from the Kennedys for 13 years. In 1959, they began operating the rural mail route and continued to do so for 23 years.

Maxine loved the outdoors and helping on the ranch, which included driving tractors, haying, gardening, and raising chickens and pigs. She also loved fishing with Eddie and had a passion for painting oil pictures. Later, her failing eyesight led her to crochet rag rugs.

Survivors include her daughter Nancy (Larry) Wilson of Dayton, Wyo.; granddaughters Tana (Dale) Stimpson of Lodge Grass and Karla (Chad) Baker of Sheridan, Wyo.; great-granddaughters Stephanie (Tyler) Peck, Ashley and Tara Stimpson, and Lauren Baker; great-grandsons Cody and Cade Baker; one sister, Carol Wise of Trout Creek; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel in Hardin. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at 3 p.m. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
