Marie Giles Baldwin, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2013.

She spent her life in dedication to her husband, raising her four children, and loving her 10 grandchildren. Marie steadfastly imparted to each of her grandchildren the importance of faith, family, hard work, and a sense of fun.

Despite a lifelong battle with painful scoliosis, she was determined to live her life to the fullest; flying in a helicopter to a mountaintop field in Nepal in her 80's to play polo atop an elephant. An avid golfer and tennis player, Marie was known for her long drives and left-handed serves. She was intelligent, strong-willed, and a lifelong student; reading Russian literature, Greek plays, and current biographies. She was a beautiful person and a gracious hostess. Until health issues prevented her, she never missed her favorite Sunday school class with her friends. In June she checked out of the hospital to catch a flight to her granddaughter's wedding in Jacksonville, Florida, where she loved being with family and celebrating with all of her grandchildren at the reception. Last week she was surrounded by all of her family to celebrate her 87th birthday.

The youngest of four, Marie was born in Dallas on October 24, 1926, to Dr. Robert Byron Giles originally of Mineola, Texas, and Freda Kroger Giles, originally of Spuyten Duyvel, New York City. Graduating from The Hockaday School with honors in 1944, she attended Wellesley College freshman year, but returned to Southern Methodist University her sophomore year due to an ice skating-induced back injury. She returned to the northeast her junior year, graduating from Barnard College in 1948 with a degree in political science. She returned home to Texas to obtain her master's degree in history from the University of Texas, writing her master's thesis on the Early History of Medicine in Dallas, 1842-1900. After Marie received her teacher's certificate, she taught 7th and 8th grades in the Highland Park Middle School as the first teacher in the Highland Park school system to have a master's degree.

On a blind date she met the love of her life, Dr. James L. Baldwin, and they married on December 18, 1954. They were a match made in heaven and were fully dedicated to each other for their 44 years of marriage. They loved playing golf and tennis with friends and traveling the world. They loved learning about other cultures and people.

Marie was a tireless volunteer for many causes, including the former Dallas Society for Crippled Children, the Dallas County Medical Society Auxiliary, and the Dallas Public Library. She also tutored children at Sudie Williams Elementary well into her 84th year. She was an active member of the Dallas Women's Club, Dallas Country Club, Brook Hollow Golf Club, Heritage Club, and Dallas Garden Club.

Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. James L. Baldwin, and is survived by her four children, Anne Baldwin Mann and husband Randall of Jacksonville, Florida, Janet Baldwin McColloch and husband Mike of Dallas, Florence Baldwin Langford and husband Tom of Houston, and Jim Baldwin and wife Susan of Dallas; her grandchildren Caroline Mann, Elizabeth Mann Rhodes and husband Chris, Randall Mann, Jr., Anne Lindsey Hunt and husband Davin, Catherine McColloch, Michael McColloch Jr., Byron Langford, Annie Langford, Sarah Baldwin, and Marie Baldwin, her namesake. Marie is also survived by her sister Anne Giles Kimbrough of Dallas, her sister-in-law, Dottie Box of Dallas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful care given to our mother by her caregivers Mary Riggs, and also Kay, Cynthia, Janice, and Delectar.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 11 a.m in the sanctuary of Highland Park Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dallas Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 9400 North Central Expy, Ste. 1201, Dallas TX 75231 or the Highland Park Presbyterian Church Foundation, 3821 University Blvd., Dallas TX, 75205.
