Jim was a newspaper publisher for a small town newspaper in Manton, Michigan and he lived there from 1983 until 2003. He had two children who he loved dearly and he died in the same hospital that he was born in.

Jim had polio at age 2 and spent a majority of his childhood in hospitals in Lansing and Grand Rapids. He was raised by his grandmother, Hazel Grace Bowman Smith Burr. She died before he graduated from high school but he had promised her that he would finish school which he did at St. Johns High School.

He moved to Colorado after that to live with his dad and sister. He met his wife, Linda out there and came back to Michigan in 1976.
