Orval was the only child of James Moore and Laura Rankin. He grew up in Smyrna, Harrison County, Ohio, and went to the one room school there with many of his cousins. He was married three times - to Katherine Corbin, Myrtle Chambers, and Carol Mount. He ended up living in Zanesville, Ohio, where he died and where he is buried. He and Katherine were the parents of four children, one, a stillbirth.
