Private, Company A, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer and most of his unit, during the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he enlisted on December 15, 1874, age age 33, in New York City. He gave his previous occupation as Coachman. He had gray eyes, brown hair, a florid complexion and was 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was once described, by writer Samuel Alcott, as "an old English dragoon." During the battle, he was with Reno's column in the initial attack into the valley, and was killed there, as the column attempted to retreat. After the battle, the dead soldiers were buried where they fell, and a year later, the bodies were dug up and reburied in a mass grave on the top of Last Stand Hill.
