He was born April 11, 1948, in McKeesport to Raymond C. and Nellie J. Smith Burkett.
He was a 1967 graduate of South Allegheny High School.
Following graduation he enlisted and served four years in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran and received the National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and Army Commendation medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Service Defense Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. After his discharge from the Army he enlisted and served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, where he served many years aboard the USS Flagship Nautilus and had spent time in Iraq and Korea. He received the Navy Battle "E" Award, the Southwest Asia Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He retired in 1992.
After retirement Charlie had worked as a disc jockey for COOL 101.7 Radio, Meadville. He loved music and had a huge record collection of 45s and LPs from the 1950s to the latest on vinyl.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville, and a member of the American Legion, Meadville.
Survivors include a daughter, Amber Nelis and her husband, Gregory, of Butler; his mother, Nellie J. Burkett, and a sister, Kathleen Coughenour and her husband, William, all of Hermitage; and several nieces and nephews.
His father, a brother, David Raymond Burkett, and a nephew, Marcus George, preceded him in death.
A graveside service and inurnment with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Deer Creek Cemetery, Sheakleyville Road, Cochranton, with the Rev. Mark Goswick, pastor of New Virginia United Methodist Church, officiating.
