Tecumseh Resident Died in Omaha

John P. Murphy Was Born in Johnson County and Most of Life Spent Here.

Information coming from Omaha to relatives in this community that John P. Murphy of Tecumseh had died unexpectedly in that city at 5:30 o'clock, a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 1943, was startling to both his relatives and many friends. His age was fifty-four years and twenty-three days. Mr. Murphy had been receiving treatment in an Omaha hospital and had submitted to an operation on Friday last. He had rallied from the effects of the treatment and had been taken to the home of his brother, L. A. Murphy, in Omaha, where he passed away as stated. His wife and her daughter were with him during the hospitalization and at the time of his death. His health had been failing for about three months and a brain hemorrhage caused his passing.

John Pierce Murphy was a son of James J. and Mary (Redden) Murphy and he was born on a farm in the Vesta section February 24, 1889. Practically all of his life was spent here. He attended the public schools of the county, farmed, and later, when he moved to Tecumseh, engaged in the things he could find to do and which he was always interested in, such as dealing by wholesale in fruits, vegetables, and so on. He had been inactive as to business for the past few years.

Mr. Murphy was a soldier in the first World war, having spent a number of months in training in this country, and eighteen months in the front lines in France. He was always an enthusiastic member of the American Legion. Mr. Murphy was a life-long member of St. Andrew's Catholic church of this city, a good christian man, and held in very high respect by all who knew him, and, as he had always lived here, his acquaintanceship and friendships were extended.

Mr. Murphy was married to Mrs. Lucy Murphy in Tecumseh on January 2, 1933. As stated, his wife survives, and there two brothers and three sisters; L.A. Murphy of Omaha, J.J. Murphy of Knoxville, Iowa, Elizabeth Power of Kansas City, Mo., Ellen, Mrs. John Varvel of Marsland and Mary Herbst of Milwaukee. Mrs. Murphy has three children: Genevieve, wife of Clifford Allen of Crab Orchard, Myrtle, wife of Ensign Keith Gibbs of Sanford, Fla., and Miss Geraldine Murphy at home.

The funeral will be held at St. Andrew's church in this city at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning, Rev. Thomas Barden in charge. Members of the American Legion will attend in a body, and they will participate in the burial service, at St. Andrew's cemetery, north of the city.
