Eugene Kemp, WWII veteran of New Guinea
Eugene Elmer Kemp, 80, of 787 Simonds Road, a veteran of the New Guinea campaign in World War II, died Tuesday in North Adams Regional Hospital after collapsing while shoveling snow.
He was the maintenance supervisor at the Treadway Williams Inn. He worked there for 53 years, starting as a gardener and then becoming the maintenance chief and head gardener.
Born in Savoy, he attended schools there and in Leyden, Colrain and Griswoldville.
He served in the Army in the South Pacific in World War II, and saw action in the bitter Australian-U.S. struggle to dislodge the Japanese from New Guinea in 1943-44. Kemp was a member of the legendary "Lost Battalion" there.
He was a member of the Bethel Pentecostal Assembly in North Adams. He was an avid gardener.
He leaves his wife, the former Estella Mae Wilson; a son, Eugene Elmer Jr. of Williamstown; a daughter, Nancy Ann Miller of Florida; two brothers, Clifton Elliott and Ernest Darwin of Williamstown; eight grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday morning in the church with burial in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday evening at George M. Hopkins Funeral Home.
