Charles was a veteran of the Civil War, having served the Confederacy. He enlisted 6 May, 1862 at Richmond, Texas as a private to serve the length of the war. He enlisted in Co. E,Waul's Legion Cavalry Regiment, Texas. 1 Jan. 1863 he was promoted to 5th Sergeant. The regiment was mustered out May 1865. He enlisted with three other brothers, John A., William H., and Daniel P. Janes and they all served in Waul's Regiment.
