--October 22, 1863 ... "the Yankees arrested Honore DeJean's only surviving son, Octave Dejean as well as a neighboring planter, Charles Close." p.215
--Following the Union occupation (late 1863) ... "Most of the political prisoners, including Jeames Earl Bradley, Joes and Seonce Sandoz, Raimondi Deshotels, Octave Dejean and Charles Close were set free. On the other hand the hositlities and divisiveness which had characterizd the Opelousas country since the first invasion grew even more intense ... Old friends sometimes became violent enemies as was the case when Octave DeJean, the only surviving son of Honore Dejean (the tornado victim) was gunned down in an Opelousas bar by his neighbor, Charles Close." p.264

A difficulty having occurred between Charles Close and Octave Déjean, this last received a blow of rifle at the right Side, of which he died a few moments afterwards. Not knowing the details of this business, we abstain from any comment on this subject."
