Born in Birmingham, England, he arrived in New York City in 1871. He enlisted on February 3, 1872, at age 22, in Chicago, giving his previous occupation as Gunsmith. He was transferred from Columbus Barracks, Ohio, to Shelbyville, Kentucky, and in 1873, transferred to Fort Totten, Dakota Territory. In April 1875, he was transferred to the 7th Cavalry at Fort Abraham Lincoln, South Dakota. He had gray eyes, light hair, a light complexion, and was 5 feet 7 inches tall. On February 14, 1873, he was sentenced to loss of $10 for being AWOL from his company for several days, as per General Court Martial Order # 12, Department of the South, Louisville, KY.
