On 10 Sept 1869, a Doane Family memorial meeting was held at Eastham to witness the erection of a granite post on the site of Deacon John Doane's house. This site is on the eastern side of town, perhaps 300 yards from the waters of Nauset Bay extending to the south, about 1/2 mile from the Atlantic shore and 2 1/2 miles from Barnstable Bay to the west. The old cellar overgrown with wild grass was in a field of about 15 acres, owned by Mr. Benjamin Higgins. The stone, a rough block of granite, was erected by the Hon. John Doane of Orleans on which occasion an historical address was delivered by Heman Doane Esq., followed by the signing of an original hymn.
