Private, Company L, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer, and most of his unit, during the Battle of the Little Big Horn. In the company, his job was Saddler.

He enlisted on August 18, 1875, at age 27, in St. Louis, Missouri. He gave his previous occupation as Shoemaker. He had black eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and was 5 feet 10 inches tall. During the battle, his company was in the Custer Battalion and was wiped out the afternoon of the first day of battle. Initially he was buried where he fell, but a year later, the graves were dug up and the bodies buried in the mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill.
