Myrtha Schmieding Zillig. He was baptized
Nov. 5, 1939 and confirmed Mar.
29, 1953. Merlin graduated from Seward
High School in 1957 and served four
years in the United States Marine Corps.
On Sept. 11, 1965 he married Linda
Byrne at Nebraska City, Neb. They lived
in Newell where they were owners of
the Ol Saloon.
He was a member of the Elks, the
NRA and the Buena Vista Pistol and
Gun Club.
Merlin passed away after a lengthy
illness at home in Newell on Thursday,
Mar. 9, 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Linda;
daughters, Lisa, Fonda and Lori, Cedar
Falls; his parents, Arthur and Myrtha,
Seward, Neb.; a brother, Phillip and his
wife, Judy, Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Imo

Loveland, Colo.; his mother-in-law,
Berniece Byrne, Newell; and nieces and
