Private, Company C, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer and most of his unit, during the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

He enlisted on September 24, 1875, at age 22, in Chicago, Illinois. He gave his previous occupation as Farmer. He had blue eyes, light hair, a fair complexion and as 5 feet, 5 3/4 inches tall. In some documents his last name is spelled as "Philips". During the battle, his unit was with Custer's column, and he was killed during the retreat up last stand hill.
