The Tennessee Death Records (image at right) give his name as "Elwin A. Lathrope" -- which appears to be correct, (especially as the dates on the stone correspond with the birth and death dates on the certificate and other documents for Lathrope), despite the alternative spelling ("Alwin Lathrop") on the stone. The death record indicates that he was born in Worcester (mispelled as "Worchester"), Mass. but in fact he was born in Dalton, Coos County, NH, the son of Alison Willis Lathrop (1948-1912) and Emeline Louisa Bolles (1850-1929). Spellings vary throughout the family. Although his father's last name is spelled without an 'e' on his own grave, Elwin's marriage certificate identifies his father as "A.W. Lathrope" although by the time of A.W.'s death, it was written "Alison W. Lathrop."

Lathrope was a carpenter (the trade his father had followed) and for a time an "architect" in the Worcester area. He married Harriet M. Carleton (1875-1939) in Lisbon, NH in 1900. Lathrope worked for a time in Detroit in the 1930s, though his wife remained behind in Worcester, where she died in 1939.
