Gerald I. Burger, 55, of 2642 Quick Silver Dr., Fleming, died unexpectedly Monday, April 25, 2005 at Auburn Memorial Hospital. Mr. Burger was born in Auburn on May 30, 1949. He was the son of the late John "Otso" Burger and Lorraine Stanford Burger of Auburn. Gerald attended local schools and later served with the US Army during Vietnam. Gerald was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star as a result of his heroic actions during his service in Vietnam. He recently was instrumental in organizing reunions of the 199th Red Catchers, and locally was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1975. In the past, Mr. Burger had been employed with K-Mart of Auburn for many years as an appliance manager. Gerry was not only very proud of his service to his country but of his service with the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1. Gerry was a past President of the organization and former Fire Chief of the Department. Though his health had declined due to injuries sustained during Vietnam; he continued to support the Department during its many activities and functions.

Gerry will be sadly missed by his fellow firefighters, veterans, friends and especially his loving family; his wife of 26 years, Cindy Walters Burger of Auburn; his four daughters, Jamey Burger DeWitt and her husband, Lee (Skeeter) Crossley of Auburn, Alicia Burger of Buffalo, Jacqueline and Lindsay Burger both of Auburn; two grandsons, Christopher DeWitt and Conner Crossley. Gerry is also survived by his mother, Lorrain Burger; sisters, Sharon Burger, Kathie Taro and Kristine (Richard) March all of Auburn; his brothers, Master Sergeant Karl (Carrie) Burger of NC, now serving in Iraq and John Burger of Boston; an aunt, Sister Marjorie Burger of Fairport; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gerry was predeceased by his father, John Burger; a daughter, Lynn Marie; and a sister, Carol Davia.

Family prayer services will take place at 8:45 a.m. on Friday at the White Chapel Funeral Home, 197 South St. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with military honors. Friends are invited to visit with his family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at White Chapel.

Gerry's family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department, 69 West Lake Rd., Auburn, NY 13021 in memory of Gerald I. Burger. [sueweller1955]
