He married Lucy Hildreth in Westford, Middlesex County, Masachusetts, in 1836, and became a naturalized citizen in 1844. The family is enumerated in the 1840 U.S. census in Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York, and in the 1850 U.S. census in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. Robert's occupation in 1850 was "news agent." He died in 1857, followed two years later by his wife. There were at least six or seven children in the family, two of whom are presumably buried with the parents.
